Meany's Shoes is a family run business in the town of Carrick-on-Suir, on the border of the three counties of Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny. Steeped in tradition, local historians have been able to date the Meany family business right back to shoemakers in the 18th Century. With this strong tradition of personal service and good fitting shoes, it is no wonder that this business has such a strong reputation. Customers come from far and wide to avail of the huge selection for all the family.

The foot is a complex structure made up of 26 bones. These bones are designed to support the entire body, move us around and absorb shock. When a child is born the bones in the foot are not fully developed and a baby’s foot contains more cartilage than bone, which over time will fuse and harden into adult bones. This cartilage is soft and pliable and can be easily malformed and compressed, damaging the foot. This is why great care must be taken in the fit and style of children's shoes
Our feet are the foundation of our bodies. We require them to support us every day and allow us to participate in many different activities and sports. Studies show that many adult foot issues begin in childhood. To help reduce the possibility of longer term foot issues, it is critical for parents to check their children's shoes regularly to ensure that they still fit. Although the structure of the foot develops fully by the first 2 years, the bones themselves do not fully develop and harden until around the age of 13. This is why it is crucial to have good shoes early on, so that the bones are allowed to develop naturally.
Busy Little Feet
Childrens’ feet endure about 3 times more stress than the average adult foot, because of the vast amount of high impact activities of active little feet. To combat the high stress that a child’s foot endures, children should wear correctly fitting shoes with good shock absorption, a well-made foot bed, and durable soles.
Growing Feet in Safe Hands
Given that less than a third of kids have an "average" foot width, we stock a vast range of shoes, many in 1/2 sizes and width fittings to ensure a great fit!
There should be enough space for growth and movement, allowing the smaller and more easily damaged bones in the forefoot to develop without being under pressure (but not too long that babies are tripping over!)
More than just measuring!
Our trained fitters will measure both feet but this is only the starting point to that perfect pair of shoes. Two different styles in exactly the same size and even the same width fitting can differ greatly, so we will check them on the foot and the fitter can make the necessary adjustments, if required, in width, length or toe shape so that a good fit is achieved. Remember when buying on-line from us, each order is dealt with personally by one of the Meany family or Meanys Shoes staff, so we have a wealth of knowledge about the fitting of each shoe. We are on hand to help you when choosing styles or sizes depending on your child’s foot, so don’t hesitate to get in touch!
